Visted
one of the most anticipated sites this morning – Xuankong Temple (hanging
temple) in the Jinlong Gorge of the Henghshan mountains.
The
temple complex is built on the side of the cliff, being supported on wooden
beams driven into the rock. The construction timber had been lowered down from
the top o the cliff with ropes.
The
complex supports Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.
Sadly,
we couldn’t climb up to it as only 100 people are allowed in at a time and
there was a an hour wait in the queue to get in (we just didn’t have the time –
pity)
There
are shops on either side of the path to the temples where they were selling all
sorts of stuff (food and other things – Marg bought a type of bun to taste) – Everybody
appears to use WeeChat Pay – not cash or our normal credit cards. Even roadside
shops use it – it’s all online payment!
Visited
the Nine Dragons Wall. There are several ‘Nine Dragon Walls’ around the country
including the Forbidden City, Beijing, Pingyao and Hong Kong.
We also visited a segment of the Datong Old City Wall (well restored at much expense – appears to be a common thing in China)
A word
about the hotel – Datong Yungang Hotel (best told in pictures).
As a
coal mining town, Datong is prosperous, with number of building not following
the ‘match-box’ apartment architecture.
