Yungong Grottos...

 2025-10-20 (Monday)

We visited the Yungong Grottos – another highlight of the trip! This UNESCO Heritage listed site built between 46 and 494 CE consists of 53 caves containing a total of 51,000 Buddha statues from fifth and sixth centuries. We only visited some of the caves (some were closed for repairs) and the statues carved in stone as well as the frescos on the walls are amazing.

One negative aspect of the very professional and classic presentation of the background music (should have been replaced with a gentle chanting tape – as was done in quite afew other sites)

Huayan Temple was next on the list (after lunch).

An old temple with many Buddha images and frescos. There’s also a Monastery here.

Went out to dinner – another, less elaborate version of a banquet where we ordered just what we wanted.
